Cricket World Cup 2027 tri series Windhoek
The event’s official name is the FNB T20 Tri-Series. South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia play each other twice across seven T20 internationals before the top two meet in a final, then South Africa and Namibia add three ODIs from September 9, a first. All ten matches happen at the two-ground FNB Namibia Cricket Ground. Every cent of tri-series profit goes to the Africa Cricket Association, earmarked for growing the game continent-wide.

Board Leaders Link Fixtures to Continental Growth
The ICC framed the tour as an early taste of next year’s tournament, returning to Africa after 24 years. CSA chief executive Pholetsi Moseki tied it to strengthening the game in neighbouring countries. Cricket Namibia chief executive Johan Muller thanked the South African and Zimbabwean boards, calling it a shared vision for the sport.
Zimbabwe Cricket managing director Givemore Makoni welcomed the regular, high-quality cricket it gives a squad that rarely gets it. ACA chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani called it the start of a new chapter for African cricket, aimed at a proposed Africa Cup competition for 2027 that gathered momentum at the 2026 ICC Africa Annual Conference in Windhoek.
South Africa will send a weakened squad, needing an extended group available for Tests against Australia, Bangladesh and England, plus nine ODIs and three T20Is elsewhere. That says a development tri-series still ranks below the format that pays the bills.
Host Nations Race to Finish New Venues
The tournament runs provisionally from October 4 to November 21, 2027: 14 teams, 57 matches, 12 venues. South Africa hosts 44 of those matches across eight venues; Zimbabwe and Namibia share the rest. LOC chief executive Qondisa Ngwenya said in July 2026 the co-hosts were doing well on infrastructure, needing no new construction except in Victoria Falls.
Namibia’s job is done, with FNB Namibia Cricket Ground finishing construction in August 2025 and opening that October with a sold-out South Africa T20I; capacity runs 7,000 to 7,500. Zimbabwe carries the remaining risk: Harare Sports Club and Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo need no new building, but the Mosi-oa-Tunya stadium in Victoria Falls, funded by Zimbabwe Cricket at twelve million US dollars, was around 90 percent complete, targeting a 2027 debut. South Africa’s eight grounds, led by the Wanderers, Newlands and Kingsmead, already hosted the 2003 and 2007 World Cups plus the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup.
A New Precedent for Co-Host Nations
Co-host tri-series before an ICC World Cup are rare. No formal tri-series among South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya preceded the 2003 World Cup; England and New Zealand forfeited matches there over security fears in that same tournament. The 2024 T20 World Cup co-hosts, the US and West Indies, never played a formal series beforehand.
This region’s co-hosts have barely met on a field. The first senior South Africa v Namibia T20I came only in October 2025, at this ground’s inauguration, months after Namibia’s rain-hit debut against Canada. Namibia then co-staged the 2026 Under-19 World Cup, earning praise from ICC staff for how it handled the event.
The Cricket World Cup 2027 tri-series in Windhoek is unlikely to repeat before the tournament begins, and that is exactly why it counts. Three nations who have barely played each other now share a ground, a schedule and a stated goal, months before they share a World Cup. This version of preparation looks like the real thing.
