After frequent reports surfacing around India’s participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy, set to be played in the neighbouring nation, Pakistan, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has dropped a bold clarification. Speaking of the Champions Trophy, which will be the next ICC major after the T20 World Cup 2024, will be played in February – March 2025.
BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla told ANI that India’s participation in the tournament relies on Government of India’s decision. “In case of the Champions Trophy, we will do whatever the Government of India will tell us to do. We send out team only when the Government of India gives us permission. So we will go according to the decision of the Indian government,” he said to ANI.
The tensions between India and Pakistan have significantly impacted their relations when it comes to cricket. The two nations last played in 2008 and the bilateral series suspended since December 2012 – January 2013. The 2023 edition of Asia Cup was shifted to a hybrid model with India playing all its matches in Sri Lanka.
Rajeev Shukla reacts after terror threats in West Indies
Speaking to ANI, the BCCI Vice-President also spoke about India’s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 after West Indies reportedly received terror threat recently. He clarified that the responsibility of security lies in the hands of the host nations, the final decision definitely lies in the hand of the Indian government.
“As far as threat is concerned, the responsibility of security lies with the security agencies of the country that is hosting the game. Every precaution will be taken. We will take whatever steps are necessary for the safety of the players and spectators. We will talk to the agencies responsible for carrying out the World Cup. We will go according to the decision taken by the central government. We are in touch with WI and USA government,” he said.
Shukla’s statement comes after Trinidad’s Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley revealed the threat before asserting that “extra effort in national security preparations and response readiness” will be put in to neutralize the danger.
