Azmatullah Omarzai is the front-runner to fill Nabi’s all-rounder role after Afghanistan named a 15-man T20I group on 1 October 2026 without the veteran all-rounder. Uncapped Abdullah Tarakhil is the other all-rounder in the party for three matches in Sharjah on 27 October, 29 October and 1 November. Nabi remains in the ODI tri-series squad for 17 to 23 October, and the board has given no official reason so far for his T20I omission, which leaves Omarzai’s 66 caps as the strongest case.
Selectors Name Fifteen for Sharjah
The Afghanistan Cricket Board announced the group on 1 October 2026 for three T20Is in Sharjah, scheduled for 27 October, 29 October and 1 November. Ibrahim Zadran captains the side, with Gurbaz and Noor Rahman as the wicketkeepers and Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Fazal Haq Farooqi forming the core of the bowling. Faridoon Dawoodzai, Qais Ahmad and Nangyalai Khan are named as reserves. Most other places go to Atal, Omarzai, Tarakhil, Akram, Kamal, Ijaz Ahmadzai and Abdullah Ahmadzai, giving Zadran a wide pool to choose from.
Several changes stand out. Mohammad Akram arrives after an Asian Games debut, and Tarakhil earns a first call-up as an uncapped all-rounder from the Shpageeza League. Ijaz Ahmadzai and Shahidullah Kamal are recalled, while Farid Ahmad Malik is promoted from the reserves. Those additions show selectors prefer fresh options over reshuffling a familiar core in a three-match series.
Mohammad Nabi dropped from Afghanistan T20I squad
Nabi is absent from the T20I group but remains in the ODI tri-series squad for 17 to 23 October, which points to a format decision rather than a full exit. That leaves him available for the 50-over contests in October while the shorter format moves on without him. Darwish Rasooli misses both squads. The board has offered no official reason for either omission, so any explanation remains speculation.
The timing is surprising given his recent output. He made 20 off 14 balls against India on 15 September 2026 and now sits on 2,501 T20I runs and 111 wickets. His 4/7 against Canada on 19 February 2026 remains his best T20 World Cup return, in a match Afghanistan won by 82 runs, and he had reached 100 T20I wickets on 3 September 2025. A player with those numbers rarely leaves a squad on form alone, which is why the lack of an explanation matters.
Omarzai Is the Natural Successor
Azmatullah Omarzai has the clearest claim on the vacant role. He has played 66 T20Is, scoring 808 runs at an average of 17.95 with a high score of 53, and he has taken wickets at an average of 24.59 with best figures of 4/9. Those numbers are current to 19 July 2026, and his strike rate and economy are not available. A batting average below 18 is modest, but a bowling average of 24.59 and a best of 4/9 show he contributes with the ball as well as the bat.
Tarakhil is the longer-term option. The uncapped all-rounder earned his place through the Shpageeza League, but he has no international record to measure yet. Reliable all-round numbers for Rashid Khan, Akram and Kamal are not on record either, so Omarzai’s proven figures set the benchmark. If selectors want a like-for-like replacement for Nabi’s two-skill role, Omarzai is the only one with an established international record in the data available.
Franchise Deal Adds Another Twist
Nabi was sold to Sharjah Warriorz for USD 140,000 at the ILT20 Season 5 auction on 1 October 2026, the same day the T20I group was named. Sharjah is also the venue for the three internationals. No other 2026 franchise form is available to show whether his bat or ball has slipped. The price shows franchise demand for him remains strong, even as national selectors look elsewhere.
Afghanistan have won 98 of 164 T20Is through 13 September 2026, and no result exists to compare matches with and without Nabi. That is a winning rate close to 60 percent, so the team does not lack results when it settles on a group. Because he played the India T20Is in Delhi in September, the Mohammad Nabi-dropped Afghanistan T20I squad is fresh, and only Sharjah will show whether the side misses him.
