What Does Shoriful Islam's Fitness Clearance Mean for Bangladesh's Second Test?

Shoriful Islam has been cleared to fly out and join the squad for the second Test in Mackay, closing out a month-long recovery from a hamstring strain. He missed the entire first Test in Darwin as a precaution. His return gives Bangladesh a genuine like-for-like swap for the seamer they’ve been missing since mid-July, at a point in the tour where their pace stocks were already stretched thin by two other long-term absences. The timing works out almost perfectly for a squad that had begun the series short-handed.

Clearing hamstring rehab in time for Mackay

Shoriful picked up a grade one left hamstring strain on July 14 during the Zimbabwe tour, and the board’s rehab plan had him back bowling within two weeks. His fitness assessment landed around August 12, and it came back clean.

Team physio Mujadded Alfa Sani signed off on the recovery personally, briefing the coaching staff that Shoriful was fully fit to travel and posed no risk of a repeat strain under match conditions. That clearance means he departs for Australia immediately, bypassing Darwin entirely and joining the group directly for the Mackay Test later this month. Two weeks of graduated bowling loads were enough to convince the medical staff there was no lingering risk.

Shoriful Islam Bangladesh Australia Test series

The Darwin squad named on July 23 already told part of this story. Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Syed Khaled Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury carried the pace attack there, with uncapped quick Musfik Hasan given his first call-up to fill out the group.

That’s a workable attack for one match, but it left almost no room for injuries or rotation across a two-Test tour. Getting a recognised seamer back for the second match eases pressure the coaching staff clearly didn’t want to carry into Mackay, particularly with two other frontline options already ruled out for months and a third only partially available.

Pace Bowler Fitness Status Expected Test
Shoriful Islam Cleared, joining Mackay squad Second Test only
Nahid Rana Out for the entire series Unavailable for both
Tanzim Hasan Sakib Out for most of 2026 Unavailable for both
Mustafizur Rahman Out for Darwin, fit after Aug 18 Second Test only
Taskin Ahmed Fit Both Tests
Hasan Mahmud Fit Both Tests
Syed Khaled Ahmed Fit Both Tests
Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury Fit Both Tests
Musfik Hasan Fit Darwin squad, may be dropped

 Rana’s long layoff removes a leading wicket-taker

The gap Shoriful is filling isn’t the only one. Nahid Rana picked up a grade two side strain during a T20I against Zimbabwe in mid-July and has been ruled out of the entire Australia series, not just one match.

That absence stings more than the numbers around Shoriful’s case. Rana had taken 44 international wickets in 2026 at an average of 18.31, the most of any bowler in the calendar year, including four separate five-wicket hauls before the injury ended his involvement in the tour before it even began.

The board’s own estimate put his recovery at six to eight weeks once bowling workload was factored in on top of tissue healing, which rules him out for both matches regardless of how the series progresses from here.

The Mackay squad picture starts to take shape

Mustafizur Rahman remains sidelined for Darwin too, with a hamstring and calf issue that keeps him out until at least August 18, meaning he could still join the group in time for Mackay if his own recovery stays on schedule. Musfik Hasan looks the likeliest man to make way once Shoriful is available again, given his call-up was always framed as cover rather than a long-term fixture in the XI.

Between Rana’s long-term absence and Tanzim Hasan Sakib’s hip fracture, Bangladesh have lost two frontline options for the entire tour, which makes every fit body in the Shoriful Islam Bangladesh Australia Test series picture count for more than it normally would at this stage of a tour.

Darwin’s first Test result will shape some of the thinking, but the broader pace-bowling picture is now clearer than it has been at any point since the Zimbabwe tour ended. Shoriful’s return is a genuine boost, not just a formality, and it gives the team management one fewer selection headache heading into a demanding second week.
