India picked a 15-man Test squad for Sri Lanka that hedges on its two biggest calls. Jasprit Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan are both named subject to medical clearance, meaning the attack’s spearhead and the middle order’s newest fixture could still change before the series opener in Galle. The BCCI’s Centre of Excellence now controls both outcomes, running scans and workload assessments over the next fortnight. Ravindra Jadeja returns fully cleared after his tennis elbow layoff, while uncapped off-spinner Saransh Jain earns a maiden call-up off a stacked domestic season.
The Pacer’s Road Back From Knee Injury
Bumrah suffered a left knee impact injury fielding in the second ODI against England at Cardiff on July 17, and reactive swelling ruled him out of the third ODI at Lord’s two days later.
Scans on July 24 confirmed soreness, and he received an anti-inflammatory injection. Rest continues until July 30, when he reports to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence for rehabilitation and clearance scans, with the medical board assessing his bowling workload before signing off on red-ball cricket.

India Sri Lanka Tests Bumrah Fitness
Sudharsan’s inclusion carries the same asterisk as the pace spearhead’s. The board hasn’t named the concern, nor confirmed any link to the rib injury he carried earlier this year.
In January, he fractured his right seventh rib diving for a run against Madhya Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, projected to sideline him six to eight weeks. That rehab is complete, and his recovery is reportedly progressing well. Padikkal is the fallback at No. 3 if he doesn’t clear. Sudharsan made his case anyway, scoring 168 for India A against Sri Lanka A.
Jadeja’s Full Recovery From Tennis Elbow
Jadeja’s tennis elbow flared up during IPL 2026, ending his tournament early. He retired hurt on 34 off 19 balls for Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans, with Harsha Bhogle confirming the diagnosis on commentary.
He hadn’t played for India since a January ODI against New Zealand, and the layoff ran May to July. He was confirmed fit ahead of the July 28 announcement, with no fitness-clearance asterisk attached.
Saransh Jain’s Selection and the Road Ahead
Jain’s call-up is the squad’s biggest domestic story. The 33-year-old off-spinning all-rounder from Indore, employed by India Post, replaces the injured Washington Sundar after 54 first-class games and 188 wickets.
He was Player of the Series at the 2025-26 Duleep Trophy, taking 16 wickets in two matches, including 8 in the final, as Central Zone won their first title in about 11 years. He then top-scored for Madhya Pradesh in Ranji with 518 runs and 30 wickets.
The tour opens with a four-day practice match in Colombo from August 7, before the India Sri Lanka Tests Bumrah fitness question is answered at Galle on August 15. The second Test follows at Colombo’s SSC from August 23, with India fifth in the current World Test Championship cycle.
