It is the first time in his career that Ngarava has led the side in the 50-over format, and the appointment comes with an unavoidable backstory: he replaces Sean Williams, who is not being considered for selection after disclosing a struggle with drug addiction and entering rehabilitation. The change follows directly on from a historic Test win over the same opponents just days earlier.
The Appointment Confirmed For Harare
Zimbabwe Cricket has confirmed Richard Ngarava as captain for the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh, with matches scheduled for July 6, 9 and 11, 2026, all at Harare Sports Club. It is Ngarava’s first appointment to lead the side in ODI cricket; his only previous captaincy experience before this series came across just four T20I matches, making this a significant step up in responsibility for the seam bowler.
The timing follows directly from Zimbabwe’s Test win over Bangladesh, completed just days earlier, and from Williams stepping away from national selection entirely. The board moved quickly to confirm the new arrangement rather than leave the leadership question open heading into the white-ball series.
Zimbabwe New ODI Captain Bangladesh Series
Ngarava takes over from Williams, who had held the ODI captaincy since September 2019, when he succeeded Hamilton Masakadza on Masakadza’s retirement, and who had captained the side across all three formats from that point onward. Ngarava’s rise to the role also carries historical weight beyond the simple change in leadership: he became only the third Black captain in Zimbabwe’s Test history during the series just finished, a distinction that has drawn attention well beyond the immediate team news.
That Test match ended in Zimbabwe’s biggest-ever win by margin, an innings and 85 runs, with the seamers sharing all ten wickets in Bangladesh’s first innings after Ngarava won the toss and chose to bowl first. Bangladesh collapsed to 140 all out on a Harare surface that clearly favoured the home attack. Ngarava has said his focus entering the match was on making history, noting that Zimbabwe had never previously won back-to-back Test series until this result secured exactly that achievement.
The Reason Williams Is Not Involved
Zimbabwe Cricket confirmed in November 2025 that Williams had disclosed, during an internal investigation, that he had been struggling with drug addiction and had voluntarily entered rehabilitation. He had withdrawn from the squad ahead of the T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier in September 2025, initially citing personal reasons rather than the underlying issue that later came to light.
The board said Williams will not be considered for national selection and that his central contract would not be renewed beyond its expiry at the end of 2025, citing a history of disciplinary issues and repeated unavailability that had affected team preparation and performance over an extended period. It also acknowledged his contribution to Zimbabwean cricket across two decades of service. Williams leaves the ODI side with 164 caps, 5,217 runs at an average of 37.53, eight centuries and 37 fifties; a standalone win-loss record for his time as captain has not been published by any tracked source.
The Test Form That Preceded This
Ngarava’s own numbers in the Test match were central to the result. He took 2 for 18 in the first innings and 3 for 32 in the second, five wickets in the match overall, and dismissed Shadman Islam with a delivery that swung away late on the second day. Zimbabwe’s seamers took all 20 wickets across the match, only the second time that has happened in the country’s Test history, after a losing effort against Pakistan in Rawalpindi in 1993.
In ODI cricket specifically, Ngarava arrives with 55 matches, 70 wickets, an average of 30.69 and an economy of 5.29, with best figures of 5 for 32, and currently sits 20th in the ICC’s ODI bowling rankings on 569 points.
