Why Has the New Hyderabad Franchise Chosen Jason Gillespie to Build Their Legacy From a Blank Canvas

Coaching influences are always hidden in plain view of fans during every season of the Pakistan Super League. While we spend countless hours on the most valuable draft picks as well as the most important “death-over” bowlers, the coaches are typically what tip the scales to determine whether a team will be successful or unsuccessful each season. PSL 2026 is now off and running with two coaching hires that seem more like philosophies than simply routine appointments.

A Franchise Built from Empty Space

The Hyderabadis are building their own legacy rather than inheriting someone else’s. With the PSL auction on the horizon, Gillespie will take on an almost unheard-of coaching position in T20 leagues as he will be an architect, rather than a caretaker. There is no core to inherit, there are no preconceived notions of “how things have always been,” and there is no “this is what we’ve always done.”

That is consistent with Gillespie’s coaching style. He has relied on structure and process-based cricket as well as clarity of roles to guide his teams. The six months he spent coaching the Pakistan Test team in 2024 were both short and contentious, and ended just before their trip to South Africa due to a major dispute with the PCB. Regardless of the politics surrounding his tenure with Pakistan, however, Gillespie remains a coach who is known for developing players and providing tactical discipline – two elements that are critical for a new franchise that will be built from scratch.

The Hyderabad ownership group stated that they were entering a new era with “clear vision” and a “locked-in direction”. This is somewhat unexpected, as many have questioned whether this will be just one of many examples of meaningless marketing.

From Red-Ball Fallout to T20 Reset

It is quiet irony for the PSL when it happens as well. Gillespie’s departure from Pakistani Cricket was acrimonious, public, and left open-ended. The return of Gillespie to Pakistan through Franchise Cricket seems to flip a reset switch – less bureaucratic, more control, and fewer compromises.

Most often, T20 Leagues favor coaches who keep things simple rather than try to revolutionize T20 tactics. Gillespie’s job won’t be to create new T20 tactics; instead, he needs to bring order to this process quickly: a balanced approach in the auction, clearly define his Leadership Group, and a Bowling Attack that does not rely on miracles to save games at the end.

This matters according to history as well. Of all of the teams that have been successful in the PSL (Islamabad United and Multan Sultans), they both had consistent coaching philosophies rather than teams with many superstars. A new team like Karachi Kings could benefit from Gillespie’s calm approach that focuses on process and not creating a chaotic start for their first season.

Islamabad’s Choice of Familiar Firepower

If Hyderabad is a blank canvas, then Islamabad United are weapons of continuity. Luke Ronchi’s selection in Islamabad is more than sentimental; it has been supported by statistics as well. Luke was an embodiment of the franchise’s aggressive personality during his time at United from 2018-2020. The PSL batter with the most runs over 1,000, who has hit his runs the fastest, is Luke Ronchi with 166.12. This is also a perfect representation of Islamabad United’s batting philosophy since its inception to bat aggressively and be proactive rather than wait to see what happens.

Ronchi is now an integral part of New Zealand’s coaching ecosystem, which is known to be clear, adaptable, and empowering to players. In hiring Ronchi, Islamabad is not hiring a novice;  they are hiring a coach with experience with modern, aggressive T20 cricket, who will understand the emotional side of the franchise.

Ronchi describes the story with his own words: “Islamabad United is all about fearless cricket, and the values of the franchise of character and a winning mentality.” This is not just a mission statement; it is a follow-up plan.
