Cricket in Afghanistan has certainly had its fair share of drama and drama-filled twists and turns, from the dust-laden fields in Kabul to international stadiums and arenas. Afghan cricket has transformed itself into an emblem of hope and resilience through its journey; however, it is very much evident that the Afghanistan Premier League (APL), since its inception, has carried a distinct smell of “what could have been.” In spite of the first-ever APL being able to attract some of the biggest names in world cricket, such as Chris Gayle and Shahid Afridi, during the 2018 season, the league was unable to continue after the first year due to disputes over payments and integrity issues. Eight years on, the Afghanistan Cricket Board is returning to the same vision as before, but with some hard-won experience to take advantage of.
Franchise Cricket Meets Afghan Talent
The new APL is more than just a tournament; it can be an APL (Afghan Premier League) development pipeline. By combining the best experienced internationals with some of the younger Afghan players, the APL will create a pathway for developing skills faster than they would domestically in a competition format. For Afghanistan, experienced international players such as Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Najibullah Zadran may become role models for the younger players on the field and develop them by providing them with experience in high-pressure situations, which are less likely to occur in regular T20 domestic competitions.
Lessons Learned from 2018
Although the original APL suffered some setbacks, the errors made by the APL were helpful. The financial difficulties experienced by the APL and the poor perception of the league’s integrity negatively impacted the trust between the APL and its players, as well as between the APL and international talent; this is similar to the lessons learned by many of the emerging T20 leagues around the world. It would appear that the ACB has taken a more businesslike approach through its relationship with Cricket Venture, which is a joint venture of Trans Group and ITW Universe. Commercial partners for franchises, established identities of franchises, and a solid draft process will be in place when the new league launches. \
Timing and Market Positioning
October 2026 is more than just a date; it is a strategically positioned opportunity. It will allow Afghanistan to be able to attract a large number of top international players by avoiding overlap of their league with other major T20 events such as the Indian Premier League (IPL), Big Bash League (BBL), and other global T20 events. Smaller cricket leagues have historically had a better chance of success and survival when they can create a niche time frame for themselves, one where there is less direct competition with other major cricket tournaments. The APL has the potential to do this and provide a new alternative for fans and the media seeking high-quality content during the off-season of T20 cricket.
From Domestic Depth to International Showcase
The Shpageeza Cricket League has provided the incubation for Afghan cricket domestically; its size has limited the ability of players to have an opportunity to play against top-level competition or be exposed on a global stage. The APL will expand upon this domestic platform into a true exhibition format; five city-based franchise teams will provide a cohesive, regional identity for each team, and by doing so, create an international identity for Afghanistan’s domestic players. It is possible that if the APL is successful, it can follow the path of the Caribbean Premier League and other similar leagues around the world and establish Afghanistan as one of the legitimate cricket powers in the world.
If all of the moving pieces come together properly, the Afghanistan Premier League will prove to be an important developmental tool and a worldwide stage for Afghanistan to show off their talents, creating a new generation of players and fans. Finally, Afghanistan’s cricket team may receive the exposure it deserves.
