Who Fills the Gap in Bangladesh’s Batting Order With Mushfiqur Rahim Back From Injury?

Who Fills the Gap in Bangladesh’s Batting Order With Mushfiqur Rahim Back From Injury?

Bangladesh named a 15-man group on Saturday, 31 October, for the Sylhet Test, and the headline is a returning veteran. Mushfiqur recovered from a right index finger injury after scans showed no serious damage. His comeback forces a rethink of a middle order that folded in Mirpur, where West Indies won by eight wickets. Hridoy held the number five slot; meanwhile, Mominul is missing from the list, and Amite has been called up on the strength of big scores in the domestic league.

Squad Call Brings Fitness Relief

Shanto leads the side with Mehidy as his deputy, and the batting group around them includes Litton, Hridoy, Shadman and Tanzid, with Jaker and Amite added as extra options. The bowling department features Taijul, Nayeem, Shoriful, Taskin, Ebadot and Hasan Mahmud, ahead of a match that starts on 5 November. The finger scare looked worrying at first, yet the X-ray results ruled out anything serious, and that cleared him for selection. The medical question is closed, so only the batting puzzle remains.

Experience is the reason this matters, because Mushfiqur owns 105 Tests and 6,876 runs at an average of 39.06. Bangladesh played the Mirpur match without that calm presence and paid for it. A senior voice helps Shanto steer the team through five long days. The harder puzzle is who steps aside when the veteran walks back into the XI, and nobody in the squad announcement answers it.

Mushfiqur Rahim Bangladesh batting order Test series

Hridoy occupied number five during the absence and made 42 in the first innings, an innings that at least gave the middle some shape. Mushfiqur has the stronger claim on seniority, yet Bangladesh have not confirmed where he usually bats, so the call rests with Shanto and the coaches. Shifting Hridoy up or down the card would tilt the balance of the whole lower half. Any adjustment also leaves less room for Litton to play his natural attacking game.

Shadman carried the first innings with 105, and Litton finished unbeaten on 34. A middle that pairs Litton and Hridoy with the returning veteran looks sturdier than the one Mirpur saw. Jaker, who arrived as a concussion replacement, also earned a second look after scoring 22 in the chase. Keeping all three alongside Mushfiqur would mean leaving out a specialist elsewhere, which is a real cost.

Mirpur Innings Show the Real Problem

The hosts reached 272 in the first innings, though only Shadman, Hridoy, Litton and Mominul got past 27. Mominul batted at number three and made 28 before concussion ended his match, and Jaker came in to replace him. Totals like that rarely survive when four or five wickets fall in a rush. The pattern was clearer still in the second innings, when the team never found a platform and lost control early.

That second innings of 142 told a harsher story. Nayeem top-scored with 52, ahead of Jaker on 22, Shadman on 13 and Shanto on 10. The score slipped to 33 for 4, then 79 for 6, then 110 for 8 and 127 for 9. Nayeem added 26 with Hasan Mahmud and 17 with Taijul for the ninth wicket, and a lower-order bowler top-scoring says plenty about the top six.

Amite Waits With a Double Hundred

Amite has played one Test, against Zimbabwe on 28 June, and his first-class record reads 4,040 runs in 54 matches at an average of 50.50. In the National Cricket League, he blasted an unbeaten 201 in round four. He followed that with 34 against Chattogram in round five, after another innings on 21 October that finished short of a hundred, so the form is real and recent. A debut Test hundred is the obvious next step, though the selectors will weigh that against a single cap.

Mominul has 4,627 runs from 73 Tests at 36.72, though that figure runs only to June 2025, and his 2026 scores are not on record. Choosing between experience and form is never comfortable for a selection panel, particularly with a home series on the line. Every option carries risk, but the Mushfiqur Rahim Bangladesh batting order Test series puzzle gets solved only by runs scored at Sylhet over five days, not by names on a list.
