Who Leads England’s T20I Pace Attack in Australia With Three Frontline Bowlers Rested?

Jamie Overton and Sam Curran carry the leadership of a bowling group stripped of its biggest names for five T20Is Down Under. Four quicks were rested, not three: Archer, Atkinson, Tongue and Baker all sit in the ODI squad only. Luke Wood supplies the sharpest speed of those who remain, while Henry Crocombe and Eddie Jack are the newcomers expected to fill the gaps. Selectors named a 16-man party on Tuesday 13 October 2026. The decision is tied to managing workloads before the Tests in South Africa.

Four Quicks Rested for the Tour

England announced a 16-man T20I squad on Tuesday 13 October 2026 with Brook as captain. Archer, Atkinson, Tongue and Baker are missing from it, which makes the rested group four bowlers rather than three, and each of them has a place in the one-day party. Selector Marcus North explained that the quicks depart when the three ODIs end, a plan meant to keep them fresh for the red-ball games in South Africa. Brook now leads a party where the bowling is the story and the batting the foundation.

Beyond the fast bowlers, the squad leans on batting depth through Salt, Banton, Bethell, Jacks and Cox, with Rashid and Dawson handling spin. That shape gives Brook two spinners and only a small pool of fast bowlers for the new ball, so every seamer’s role carries extra weight.

Overton and Curran lead the experience count. Overton has 26 wickets from 24 T20Is up to 5 March 2026 at an economy of 8.23, while Curran has 66 from 75 and goes at 8.68, including a hat-trick against Sri Lanka on 30 January 2026. Both are named in the T20I and ODI squads, so neither gets a break during the tour. Together they hold 92 wickets across 99 matches.

Wood follows with 19 wickets in 17 T20Is, though his 9.06 economy is the costliest among the internationals. Crocombe and Jack carry higher rates of 10.36 and 10.95, but those come from domestic cricket and are not a fair comparison. The table below places all five fast options side by side.

Bowler Squad Status T20 Economy T20 Wickets
Jamie Overton T20I and ODI squads 8.23 (T20I) 26 (24 T20Is)
Luke Wood T20I squad only 9.06 (T20I) 19 (17 T20Is)
Henry Crocombe Both squads, uncapped 10.36 (Domestic T20) 34 (35 T20s)
Eddie Jack T20I only, maiden call-up 10.95 (Domestic T20) 8 (7 T20s)
Sam Curran T20I and ODI squads 8.68 (T20I) 66 (75 T20Is)

Debut Hopefuls Face a Steep Test

Crocombe has taken 34 wickets in 35 T20 matches and holds no international cap, yet he features in both squads, and his tally is close to a wicket a match. Jack is a different case, a maiden call-up whose evidence is eight wickets from seven T20 Blast games for Hampshire. Rew is also a first-time selection, and Coles remains uncapped.

None of the debut hopefuls have faced an Australian batting order in its own conditions, and economy rates above ten in domestic games hint at the price of an error. The selectors have backed raw potential over reputation. That gamble works only if Overton and Curran shield the newcomers in the powerplay and at the death. Wood’s 19 wickets in 17 internationals give the unit its only proven fast option who is neither Overton nor Curran.

Five Venues and a Short Window

The series starts at the MCG in Melbourne on 21 November, then moves to Gold Coast Stadium on 24 November, the Gabba in Brisbane on 27 November, the SCG in Sydney on 29 November and Manuka Oval in Canberra on 2 December. Start times have not been published. A run of five matches in twelve days leaves little room to rotate the fast bowlers who are available, and the gap shrinks to two days between Brisbane and Sydney.

Baker is the name worth watching. He was left out of the T20Is, sits in the ODI group and departs after those games for the South Africa Tests, with no fitness details released. Selectors will get their answer on the England pace attack’s Australia T20I series question between 21 November and 2 December, and the verdict will rest on whether the senior pair outlast the schedule.
