Who Leads the Warm-Up Match as Shanto Recovers From Fever Ahead of the Afghanistan Test?

Nobody has been named to lead Bangladesh in the two-day warm-up against UAE, and the board has offered no hint either way. Shanto is recovering from a confirmed infection after four days of low-grade fever, and he will not travel with the first group. That leaves the leadership question open for a match that starts on 4 October in Dubai. The date that matters most is 9 October, when the one-off Test begins in Abu Dhabi, and the selectors sound hopeful he will make it.

Fever Forces a Late Asian Games Exit

The BCB confirmed on 29 September that Shanto was ruled out of the Asian Games after four days of low-grade fever and a confirmed infection. Influenza and COVID tests both came back negative, which ruled out the two most common suspects and narrowed down what he was dealing with. The board moved quickly once the infection was confirmed. Pulling a captain out of a multi-sport event is never a casual call, and the board preferred caution over optimism.

Operations manager Shahriar Nafees said Shanto is recovering well but will not join the squad on 1 October, the day the first group moves to Dubai. Recovery is heading the right way, yet a captain who stays behind while his team assembles is no small matter in a short UAE build-up. Every day away from the group is a day of planning and practice missed before a one-off Test. The board has chosen rest over rush, and that looks like the right trade.

Shanto Afghanistan Test Warm-Up Captain Picture Stays Unclear

The board has announced no leader for the two-day match against UAE, which runs from 4 to 5 October in Dubai. The ground has not been confirmed either, so even the basics of the fixture remain thin on detail. Warm-up matches rarely come with much ceremony, but the captaincy of this one carries more interest than usual. If Shanto is still travelling, someone else has to run the side on the field.

Chief selector Habibul Bashar has said he is hopeful Shanto will be available for the Test. Hopeful is not the same as cleared, and no announcement names a stand-in for the warm-up. Whoever takes the job gets two days against UAE and no more, so the Test leadership is the decision that carries real weight. A calm, low-key choice for the warm-up would suit everyone involved, and everything else is guesswork until the board speaks.

Two Travel Groups Shape the UAE Preparation

The squad is moving in two waves, and the board has not listed who sits in each group. The first group reaches Dubai on 1 October and trains on 2 and 3 October, which gives it a clear two-day build before the warm-up begins. Anyone arriving from Japan on 6 October cannot feature in a match that ends on 5 October, so the warm-up side will come from the group already in the UAE.

The second group, made up of the Asian Games players, arrives from Japan on 6 October, and the full squad moves to Abu Dhabi that same day. Practice runs on 7 and 8 October, leaving little room for error before the Test. Shanto has no confirmed arrival date, with reports pointing either to a spot before the warm-up or to around 6 October. The gap between those two options is the whole story of his preparation.

Squad Named for the Abu Dhabi One-Off

The one-off Test runs from 9 to 13 October at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. The squad lists Shanto as captain, alongside Tanzid Hasan, Shadman Islam, Soumya Sarkar, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton Das, Tawhid Hridoy, Jaker Ali, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Khaled Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain and Shoriful Islam. That makes 15 players in the main group.

Nayeem Hasan, Musfik Hasan and Iqbal Hossain Emon wait as reserves, and naming Shanto as captain despite the fever shows where the selectors stand. The Shanto Afghanistan Test warm-up captain debate will fade fast if he is fit for the first ball on 9 October. If he is not, the reserves list and the senior names in the squad become the story, though either way the selectors have given themselves options.
