Chris Guest, speaking at the squad announcement, was bullish about the preparation. He called this the best-prepared squad England will have sent to the tournament, a bold claim given the work behind previous cycles.
He also laid out a two-sided goal for the winter. England want to win the trophy, but they also want to develop these players and show them what a professional career might look like. That second aim matters when you consider how leadership gets chosen. A squad built partly for development is exactly the kind of group where the armband can double as a learning tool for one player.

The ECB has not named anyone for the role. The official line is that a decision will come later, with selectors yet to settle on a name, and no date has been attached to that announcement. Guest praised her leadership at the time, pointing to what she showed on the Sri Lanka tour and during the preparation phase.
That detail explains the current delay better than any official statement could. Norgrove earned the role through a tour and a camp before the announcement. With this group yet to play together, it makes sense for England to watch first and appoint afterwards.
There is a practical upside too. Naming a leader too early can box selectors in if form dips on tour. Holding the decision keeps every contender motivated and gives the coaching staff real evidence rather than guesswork.
Phoebe Brett Heads the Contenders
Brett, from Warwickshire, is the only player carried over from 2025, and that experience counts for plenty in a young squad. Her career T20 record up to 17 August 2025 reads 15 matches, 24 wickets, an average of 12.04 and best figures of 4/17.
She isn’t the only name worth watching. Bryony Gillgrass, the Essex allrounder, offers balance with bat and ball, although her season numbers are thin on the public record. Allrounders often make sensible leaders because they stay involved in every phase.
Two legspinners made headlines in the 2026 Vitality Blast League One Roses match. Holly Garton took 3/23 and removed Meg Lanning off the first ball, while 16-year-old Venus Weerappuli of Lancashire dismissed Jess Jonassen. Neither looks like a natural captain yet, but both handled elite opposition.

The five T20s in India should settle the matter. England open in Baroda on 26 November and play there again on 28 November, before moving to Surat for the matches on 1, 3 and 6 December. Those games offer the kind of pressure a camp cannot recreate. Selectors will see how each contender reads a chase, sets a field and handles a bad day away from home. Brett’s head start is real, but a strong showing from someone else could still change the picture.
Playing in unfamiliar conditions, on surfaces that may help spin, is ideal preparation for a tournament in Nepal and Bangladesh. Whoever leads well in Baroda and Surat will arrive in January with credibility already earned.
