CSK’s denial tells you the stake-bid story was overblown, not that Dhoni’s relationship with the franchise is settled. Chief executive Kasi Viswanathan called the reports completely baseless on August 30, and a senior official went further, saying Dhoni had never even raised the subject with anyone at the club. What the denial doesn’t do is answer the real question hanging over Chepauk: whether the finest captain in the franchise’s history plays on, coaches, or simply becomes a name on the shareholder list.
CSK’s Blunt Denial of the Rumours
Kasi Viswanathan didn’t leave much room for interpretation, telling reporters the rumours were completely baseless when he addressed them on August 30. A senior club official went further still, insisting Dhoni had never raised the subject with the franchise and that nobody at CSK had discussed anything of the sort with N Srinivasan either.
The numbers being denied were specific enough to sound credible. Reports had Dhoni initially seeking a quarter of the franchise, with CSK reportedly countering somewhere between three and five and a half percent, before Dhoni supposedly revised his ask down toward 18 to 20 percent. CSK’s position is that none of those negotiations ever took place.
On the separate question of whether Dhoni plays on next year, Viswanathan was notably less definitive, simply saying he hasn’t yet ruled it out and that the club is content to wait for his decision. CSK, by the same account, have made no formal approach to any investor bank or advisor to explore a change in shareholding structure.
MS Dhoni Future Role IPL 2027
Nothing about CSK’s statement closes the door on Dhoni staying involved beyond this season, in whatever capacity that ends up meaning. Viswanathan’s own words from earlier this year set the tone: the club has always said it would like him as a permanent fixture, whether that’s as a player, a coach, or a mentor, and that the choice sits entirely with him. Viswanathan has said as much before too, once calling Dhoni in any capacity the best asset a team could have, a line that has aged into something close to official policy at Chepauk.
That framing matters more now than it did in May, given Stephen Fleming’s exit left CSK without a head coach heading into next season. A meeting is expected around September 22, once Dhoni returns from the United States, to help settle that appointment, and it is easy to see how his input on the new coach shapes whatever his own next chapter looks like.
Inside the Icon’s Modest Shareholding
Whatever role Dhoni ends up playing, he already owns a small piece of the club on paper. He holds more than a lakh of unlisted CSK shares, bought privately through off-market deals since the franchise isn’t traded on any public exchange, working out to somewhere between 0.01 and 0.02 percent of total equity. At a valuation above sixteen thousand crore, that stake is worth an estimated 2.6 to 3 crore, a rounding error next to his own reported net worth of around 1,200 crore.
The bulk of the franchise sits elsewhere. The Srinivasan family and the India Cements Shareholders Trust control more than 55 percent between them, with the trust alone accounting for 30 percent, Saradha Logistics holding 6.9 percent, and LIC a further 6. Public shareholders make up the remaining share, spread across more than 30 crore outstanding shares in an unlisted public company incorporated back in 2014.
The Uncertain Road Ahead for CSK
Dhoni’s on-field picture has grown murkier by the year. He was retained for just 4 crore ahead of the 2025 mega auction under the revived rule allowing uncapped players past the five-year international retirement mark, then missed the entire 2026 season with a calf injury, the first time in his career he sat out a full campaign. That absence cost the side its most experienced finisher in tight chases. CSK failed to reach the playoffs for a third consecutive season without him, and the club now heads into a head coach search with no Fleming and no clarity on its most recognisable figure.
None of that forces a decision. What CSK’s denial actually confirms is that every avenue on MS Dhoni future role IPL 2027 remains open, from playing on to coaching to simply stepping back into the shareholder register he already occupies quietly today.
