Who Made and Who Missed India's Full-Strength Asian Games 2026 Cricket Squad?

India’s selectors handed the Asian Games squad to Shreyas Iyer, naming a 15-man group featuring Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah for the September trip to Japan. Suryakumar Yadav, the reigning T20 World Cup-winning captain, was the biggest name left out of the list. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar called it a tough call built around the next two-year cycle rather than any dip in form. Tilak Varma steps in as vice-captain, and uncapped teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earns a place on form good enough to pick itself.

BCCI Names 15 Players For Aichi-Nagoya

Agarkar’s selection committee met at BCCI headquarters on June 6, 2026, and named the 15-man party for Aichi-Nagoya alongside the Ireland and England T20I squads. Shreyas Iyer takes over as captain, Tilak Varma is vice-captain, and Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan both come in as wicketkeeping options. Abhishek Sharma, Shivam Dube and Nitish Kumar Reddy add batting depth, while Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh make up the bowling attack.

Agarkar called Iyer a standout leadership candidate, citing a title-winning captaincy stint and performances strong enough to have kept him in World Cup contention. He was as direct about seventeen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, saying the youngster’s form had all but forced the panel’s hand and that he effectively picked himself.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Shock T20I Omission

Suryakumar Yadav’s last India appearance came on March 8, 2026, against New Zealand, where he was Player of the Series with 242 runs as India won the five-match series 4-1. He carries 113 T20Is, 3,272 runs at an average of 36.35 and a strike rate of 162.94, built while leading India to a successful T20 World Cup title defence.

His IPL 2026 season told a different story, just 270 runs from 13 innings at 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54, down sharply from 717 runs and the Most Valuable Player award he won in IPL 2025. Agarkar insisted the dip was not the deciding factor, pointing instead to a private conversation with Suryakumar before the meeting and to deliberations over shifting the side toward its next two-year cycle. Ravichandran Ashwin publicly pushed back on the call, arguing Suryakumar should have been given the England series to make his case before any long-term decision was taken.

India Asian Games 2026 Cricket Squad Selection

The Aichi-Nagoya event runs September 17 to October 3, 2026, with the men’s competition confined to September 24 through October 3. That window collides directly with West Indies’ tour of India, three ODIs followed by five T20Is scheduled between September 27 and October 17.

The ODI leg, running September 27 to October 3, clashes directly with the Games knockout stage, ruling eight squad members out of the home series: Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Axar Patel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh. The T20I leg, from October 5 to 17, falls clear of the Japan dates, so most of that group could still return once the knockout stage ends.

Bumrah’s Fitness Doubts Before Aichi-Nagoya

Bumrah sat out the Ireland T20Is from June 26 to 28 and the England series from July 1 to 11 under a workload plan aimed at keeping him sharp for the 2027 ODI World Cup, with Mohammed Siraj and Prince Yadav covering both tours. He had already been rested from the fourth Test against England and the one-off Test against Afghanistan on June 6, and selectors still named him for Japan, with Agarkar saying the priority was protecting him for Tests and ODIs by easing his load elsewhere.

That plan hit a snag on August 3, 2026, when a BCCI release confirmed Auqib Nabi would replace him for the Sri Lanka Tests, with Bumrah recovering from a knee injury at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. A May 30 report had already flagged his Japan participation as doubtful given seven back-to-back Tests against New Zealand and Australia before the next World Cup, and the knee issue has revived those doubts.

Between the West Indies clash and Bumrah’s fitness scare, this India Asian Games 2026 cricket squad selection carries more uncertainty than the June 6 announcement suggested. The 15 names on paper may not be the 15 who actually walk out in Aichi-Nagoya.
