How Will Gus Atkinson’s Return Impact England’s Bowling Strategy Without Jofra Archer

How Will Gus Atkinson’s Return Impact England’s Bowling Strategy Without Jofra Archer

England’s Ashes tour is going terribly, with them currently 3 down to Australia as they begin their third test in Melbourne with no confidence after losing the first test by 82 runs and the second test in Adelaide. Cricket always brings out new storylines, though, and as such, England are looking to try something different against Australia this time around. England will be trying a new approach at number three with the inclusion of Jacob Bethell, who is a left-handed batting all-rounder. In addition, Gus Atkinson is replacing the injured Jofra Archer in hopes of England gaining a better ability to use swing and pace bowling.

Bethell’s No.3: Experiment or Masterstroke?

Bethell being ranked third is both bold and innovative, as generally England’s first-choice openers provide the early Melbourne bounce with experience, but the selection panel believes that an attacking player will create uncertainty among the Australian bowling group. The left-handed batting of Bethell, for the majority of the Australian team, can cause adjustments to field settings and also the rate of delivery. In terms of statistics, historically, the combination of left/right batsmen in the top three has improved their strike rates between 12-15% in Melbourne during the last ten years. Should Bethell be able to adapt to the conditions, then this may bring about a transition from merely trying to survive through a defensive period of play to creating an aggressive and proactive innings for England.

Atkinson Returns: Reviving England’s Edge

England has brought in fast-bowler Gus Atkinson as an aggressive addition to their bowling line-up. The loss of injury to Jofra Archer leaves the responsibility of providing late swing with pace onto Atkinson and Brydon Carse. Historically, the Melbourne ground provides good conditions for aggressive bowling (bouncing ball), with consistent length bowling. It is common in such conditions for bowlers on their test debut or returning to be able to shift the momentum in a test match (see 2006 Ashes Flintoff came back into form after being dropped, and his performances turned a seemingly dead test around). If Atkinson can provide similar levels of aggression, it could at least cause some anxiety for Australian batsmen early in the game.

Leadership Under Stokes: Balancing Risk and Recovery

Ben Stokes will continue as England’s captain into a series that is rapidly falling away from him. While leadership at 3-0 down calls upon a variety of skills, including the tactical, the psychological, and the decision-making of the team’s overall direction, there are also key elements that can be classified under “moral management”, “risk-taking”, and the ability to take an opportunity to make a statement by declaring. Ben Stokes’ own performances and contributions with both bat and ball may play just as significant a part in shaping the emotional atmosphere around the team as do the scoreboard figures. In the past, those Captains who have led by example (at the MCG) have been able to inspire remarkable comebacks; however, the room for error has always been limited.

Melbourne’s Mental Maze: Can England Break Through?

The MCG is a very special venue; it is an arena for Australia’s historic dominance in the world of cricket. The combination of bounce, pace, and the partisan atmosphere at the MCG creates a perfect pressure cooker environment for cricketers. The new XI selected by England may reflect a desire to face this challenge head-on. The success of this match will depend not only on how well they execute their skills but also on how well they can mentally endure the pressure of playing in such a highly demanding venue. If England can establish a strong opening partnership in their first innings, bowl tight and consistent spells of bowling, and limit rookie mistakes, then it may be the defining factor of the test.
