A commentator sparked controversy by making racist remarks against Nepali cricketers during their clash against Canada. On October 8, Canada’s High-Performance team clashed against Nepal in Kathmandu, where one of the commentators allegedly made racist remarks at a Nepalese cricketer who was batting during the final practice match. The video of the incident sparked massive controversy and fans have been demanding action against the commentator.
In a video doing rounds on social media, the commentator could be heard making offensive remarks. Just when his fellow commentators pointed it out, he continued making remarks attempting the local accent. The video spread like wildfire on social media and fans pointed out that he was a Canadian commentator and was trying to speak Hindi and Nepali. He called a cricketer ‘Oh Sahab Ji’, referring to him as a security guard.
Nepal Rhino’s Army demands action commentator for making racist remarks
Nepal’s cricket fan club, Nepal Rhino’s Army, demanded action against the commentator and the commentator should make a public apology. The official statement by the club read, “We are deeply disturbed by the utterly disgraceful and unacceptable comments made by the commentator during the practice match between Nepal and the Canada High Performance Team. These remarks were not only inappropriate but also racist, and have no place in any form of sport. Racism and discrimination are entirely contrary to the values of respect, inclusion, and fair play that we strive to uphold in our community.”
It added, “We are calling for immediate actions to be taken, including a public apology, education on the importance of respect and inclusion, and concrete measures to prevent such incidents in the future. We will continue to work alongside relevant authorities to ensure a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment for all players, staff, and fans.”
